SEPTEMBER 11th

Of course no one will ever forget what happened a year ago. We'll all remember where we were and how we heard about the terrorist attacks. I heard about the first twin tower being hit via e-mail, but I found out that the Pentagon had been hit by looking out my office window. As crazy as that day was, I'm amazed and actually kind of proud that I never even thought about snapping a photo. At the time, driving myself and four of my friends out of the city was the only thing that mattered. I took this photo of the still burning Pentagon at 8:30 a.m. the next morning from the 9th floor of the Watergate. The building with the gold columns is the Kennedy Center.

A year later, this was a much more pleasant sight outside my window. My old friend Brian wrote to me this morning and asked how things were in Washington D.C. today. I told him that we were all a little on edge, but all was well. As I was working, I looked up at the clock which happened to read exactly 9:11 a.m. Before I even had time to process that, I heard a very loud rumble that shook the floor of the office. For a split second, I thought we were being hit again. It turned out that it was just a dump truck over at the Kennedy Center construction site. I wonder if I'll always react to a rumbling sound that way.

Before I came home tonight, I decided to go over to the rooftop of the Kennedy Center to watch the sunset. I don't get over there as often as I'd like, but the view of the Watergate today was amazing. It was so peaceful. I'm really glad I went.

"W"

I work in the Watergate building which stands next to the Kennedy Center and the Saudi Arabian embassy. Looking out my desk window, I've seen some amazing and historic things. I saw the smoke and flames pouring out of the Pentagon on September 11th. I watched the police arrest a man suspected of attempting to ram the embassy with his car. I saw a group of seven blackhawk helicopters race across the sky. I've seen a suspicious package being carried away by the bomb squad. I've also seen a huge water-main break, a cab driver have a seizure, "The West Wing" film crew, a couple of unbelievable storms, and a pretty spectacular fireworks display. This window has been good to me, and yesterday it did not let me down. The President's motorcade drove right by on their way to the Kennedy Center garage. The President was on his way to attend the taping of the "Concert for America" which will air on Sept. 11.

OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA

This is a very busy time for all of us where I work. We've been putting in some really crazy hours during this "crunch" time and we've still got a long way to go. For the particular project that I'm working on right now, I'm fortunate that I can load my work up on my laptop and take it home with me. Even though I had to work, that at least kept me out of the office this weekend. On Sunday afternoon, I took a break and went to Old Town Alexandria (Virginia) with my friends, Hillary and Kori. That's where we saw this pooch above. He was just hanging out with another dog, looking awfully bored.

We had a great time visiting "The Torpedo Factory" where we were greeted at the door by this and several other beautiful parrots. The Torpedo Factory is literally an old torpedo factory that's been converted into studio space for artists. As my interest in jewelry design increases, I wish I had that kind of studio space where I could really go nuts. Hammering metal on an anvil just isn't going to fly with the people living in the apartment below me.

SOONER OR LATER

I'm surprised I haven't seen more of this. The PT Cruiser has been around for a few years, and only now am I starting to see people get a little creative with them. Maybe that's just because I live on the east coast. This is still pretty tacky, but I think you can get away with it when you're driving this car.
