THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR

Yes friends, this is it! Halloween is by far my favorite time of year. All the other holidays are what they are, but for me, this is the only holiday that counts. Forget demons and ghouls and all that sort of crap. The thing that makes Halloween so great is that it is the only holiday that encourages creativity, and whether you're young or old, creativity is good for the soul. Happy Halloween, everyone. Have a howling good time!

AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN WASHINGTON

Several nights ago, I was walking back after parking my car. It was dark, late and a wet mist was in the air. The streets were empty and not a single person was in sight. It was as quiet as I've ever heard the city. Then, a loud howl broke the silence. There was no mistaking it. This was the kind of long, drawn-out howl that you've only ever heard in monster movies. Clearly, this was a werewolf. That's right, a werewolf - a lycanthrope, a wolf man. Call it what you will, but it was out there and it was very close. I wouldn't have believed it had I not heard it with my own ears. So I paused for a moment, looked around and saw nothing. I knew I what I had heard, and I knew I wasn't alone. Fortunately, I had less than a block to go, and I made it safely in doors. I had escaped a face to face encounter with a mythical killing machine - a werewolf!

Then again, maybe all I heard was a drunk out for a late night stroll.

I guess now I'll have to go rent this.

MOMMY'S LITTLE MONSTER

I'm back in Washington this week, and on Monday night, I went with some friends to the Social Distortion concert. What a great show that was! Social D is one hell of a good band! I've been wanting to see them play live ever since college, but I just never really had the chance. I don't know how we did it, but we managed to get within 15 feet of the stage. So, we had a perfect view while still being just out of range of the crowd surfers.

INDIAN SUMMER VACATION?

The summer is over - it has been for weeks. So why is it that now I have a burning desire to take a summer vacation? I know exactly where I want to go. I want to go here, to Monument Valley. I want to see these rock formations and photograph them myself. And if I'm already in the area, how could I not go to Dead Horse Point?

CROAK-A-DOT JR.

The finale of the Leapfrog Erie Outdoor Art Project came on Saturday with the Leapfrog Auction. I don't recall the exact numbers, but a dozen or so frogs were auctioned off in a really nice ceremony. My frog, Croak-A-Dot was not one of them. It's permanent home is at the Erie Zoo.

In addition, there were about twenty 12 inch miniature frogs up for auction, that like their big brothers, were decorated in all sorts of way. I chose to create a mini Croak-A-Dot, only this time, instead of mirrors, I used small, hand punched, sterling silver circles. My mini frog was received well, and sold for $500. My dad had a great night, as his mini frog went for $1900! If anyone is interested, you can get your own mini frog to decorate at Claytopia in Erie.

Also at the Auction, was the release of the Leapfrog Book, which looks great! There are even a few of my photos in it. All the artists in attendance sat down and signed books, which is still a little strange for me (but fun). There are a number of book signings scheduled around the city in the coming weeks. I'm going to be at the signing this Saturday at Geary's Studio 7 Gallery from noon to 4:00.

In other news, yesterday I went up on a lift to repair (or actually replace) the tail rotor on my dad's frog, Copper Hopper Chopper. The bearings on the original rotor ceased up, causing the axle to spin and wear. One thing lead to another, and after some time and a couple of good storms, the rotor came down. It's all back together now, and good as new.

Finally, my old friend Geoff is in town on his way back to Chicago. It's time to take him Frogging!
